What is a Meta Tags Preview?

A meta tags preview tool shows how your page will appear in Google search results before you publish. You enter the title tag, meta description, and URL, then see a SERP snippet rendered at Google's actual truncation points. SEOs and content writers use it to catch titles that get cut off, descriptions that lose the call to action, and URLs that look messy. Most tools also preview Twitter and Facebook social cards.

How to use this Meta Tags Preview

  1. 1

    Enter your page URL

Paste the full URL so the preview shows the correct domain and path the way Google displays it.

  2. 2

    Add your title tag

Type or paste the title. Google typically shows around 50 to 60 characters on desktop before truncating with an ellipsis.

  3. 3

    Add your meta description

Aim for 150 to 160 characters. Put the most important phrase and your call to action in the first 120 characters in case mobile cuts it short.

  4. 4

    Review the SERP snippet

Check the desktop and mobile previews. Look for truncation, missing keywords, and whether the description reads as a complete thought.

  5. 5

    Check social previews

Switch to the Twitter card or Facebook Open Graph view to confirm your og:title, og:description, and og:image render correctly.

  6. 6

Copy the tags to your CMS

Once the preview looks right, paste the final title and description into your CMS or HTML head.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for 50 to 60 characters. Google measures titles in pixels, not characters, so longer words eat into your space. Anything past 60 characters usually gets truncated on desktop.

Does Google always use my meta description?

No. Google often rewrites the snippet based on the search query, especially if it thinks a different passage from your page is more relevant. Writing a good description still helps because Google uses it when it matches the query well.

Why does the preview look different from what I see in Google?

Google personalizes results, tests different snippet formats, and sometimes pulls a passage from the page body instead of the meta description. Previews are accurate to the standard rendering, but live results vary.

What is the difference between a title tag and an H1?

The title tag shows in the browser tab and search results. The H1 is the main heading on the page itself. They can be similar but do not have to match exactly.

Do I need separate Open Graph tags for social previews?

Yes for best results. Facebook reads og:title, og:description, and og:image. Twitter reads twitter:card and related tags. If you do not set them, the platforms fall back to your standard meta tags, which often look worse.
