TLS WATCH

SSL / TLS Inspector

Query certificates directly from our Node runner. Surface issuer, SANs, expiry timelines, fingerprints, and risk windows before outages hit production.

What is a SSL Certificate Checker?

An SSL certificate, more accurately called a TLS certificate, is what makes a site load over HTTPS instead of HTTP. It proves the server is who it claims to be and encrypts traffic between browser and server. An SSL checker fetches that certificate from the live server and reports the issuer, expiry date, subject alternative names, and TLS version so you can confirm everything is healthy.

How to use this SSL Certificate Checker

  1. 1

    Enter the domain

Type the bare domain or full URL. The checker connects on port 443 and pulls the live certificate chain.

  2. 2

    Check the expiry date

Renew at least 30 days before expiry. Most browsers warn users hard the moment a certificate expires.

  3. 3

    Verify the issuer

Common trusted issuers include Let's Encrypt, DigiCert, Sectigo, Google Trust Services, and Cloudflare.

  4. 4

    Review the SAN list

Subject alternative names must include every hostname the certificate is serving, including www and any subdomains.

  5. 5

    Confirm TLS version

TLS 1.2 is the minimum acceptable. TLS 1.3 is preferred. Anything older should be upgraded immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SSL and TLS?

SSL is the legacy name. TLS is the modern protocol that replaced it. The terms are used interchangeably in marketing copy, but every modern certificate is technically TLS.

How often do SSL certificates expire?

Most public certificates issued today are valid for 90 days (Let's Encrypt) up to 398 days for paid certificates. Industry trend is moving toward shorter lifetimes.

Why does my certificate show as invalid?

Common causes are expiry, hostname mismatch with the SAN list, an incomplete certificate chain on the server, or the server using an outdated TLS version.

Do I still need to buy an SSL certificate?

No. Let's Encrypt issues free, browser-trusted certificates that renew automatically. Paid certificates are only worth it for extended validation or specific compliance needs.
